After proclaiming the state independence of Ukraine on 24 August, 1991 and taking the decision regarding formation of the national Armed Forces on 6 December, 1991, new problematic issues came into existence, in particular those connected with training of the officers of medical service in Ukraine. In this regard a critical need to create in Ukraine own system of military and medical education emerged.

The Concept for establishment of the Faculty for Training of Doctors for the Armed Forces of Ukraine of Bogomolets National Medical University was worked out in order to fulfill paragraph 5 of the Decree of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine № 820 as of 16.10.1995 "On establishment of the Military and Medical Academy of Ukraine", implement paragraph 10 of the Decision № 14 "On the outcomes of admission to higher medical education institutions of Ukraine in 1996", taken by the Collegium of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine on 20.11.1996. The main task of the Faculty was to cause training and education of up to 100 experts under core curriculums of professional direction "Medicine" for obtaining Specialist's degree with the purpose of their further entrance into the Armed Forces of Ukraine and other military units starting from 1997.

The Faculty for Training of Doctors for the Armed Forces of Ukraine was established within the structure of Bogomolets National Medical University according to the Regulations "On state higher education institution", approved by Decree № 1074 of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine as of 05.09.1996 and following Order № 132 of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine, dated 24.04.1997.

Training and education of 100 students began on 1 September, 1997. System of education, being provided by the state higher medical institutions of Ukraine, formed the basis of the doctors' training at the Faculty. T&E was performed within the core curriculums for such specialities as "General Medicine" and "Preventive Care" with 6 – year term of studies, "Stomatology" and "Pharmacy" with 5 year term of studies.

The then dean of the Faculty, Medical Corps colonel, V.V. Stolyaryk, Dean's deputies – professor O.M. Naumenko (who was an assistant as of that time), Medical Corps colonel O.I.Polezhaev (who had the rank of major as of that time) and time-table manager of the Dean's office, Y.S. Vakarenko, were directly involved in process of the first admission to the Faculty and its development.

"On special purpose training and education of doctors and doctors' assistants for the Armed Forces of Ukraine in higher medical education institutions" determined as for arrangement of special purpose training of doctors for the Armed Forces of Ukraine, which was initiated with the following targets: training of the experts – holders of Specialist's degree for medical service of the Armed Forces and other military units, formed in accordance with the legislation of Ukraine;

causing comprehensive and harmonic development of personality, formation of high-toned, human and professional military merits, upbringing awareness of duties and readiness to defend the native country;
military and patriotic upbringing;

Peculiar traits of the Faculty's activity and T&E of the students at the Faculty are:

  • special Faculty admission requirements (level of health, fitness, professional suitability psychological selection );
  • special features of training of the Faculty's students (concept of profile education);
  • peculiarities of distribution to work (employment within the system of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine and possibility to enter the Military and Medical Academy of Ukraine, and in case of the Faculties graduates, being "A" students, - admission without academic major subjects tests;
  • methodical guidance, given by the Faculty's Dean to the Departments of the Military and Medical Academy of Ukraine, dealing with T&E of Bogomolets National Medical University students according the T&E program for the reserved medical corps officers.

The Faculty is the sole professionally oriented educational division in Ukraine, which was established with the purpose of specialized preparation of future military doctors. The Faculty is administered by the Rector of Bogomolets National Medical University and Head of the Military and Medical Academy of Ukraine, acting through his deputy, who is the Faculty's Dean. O.I. Scherbak, Medical Corps Colonel, Honorary Health Protection Worker of Ukraine, chaired the Faculty for Training of Doctors for the Armed Forces of Ukraine from November 1999 to February 2005.

His deputies, Doctor of Science (Medicine), professor O.M. Naumenko, PhD (Medicine) V.V. Moskalenko, Medical Corps major, PhD (Medicine) O.M. Vlasenko, time-table manager of the Dean's office Y.S. Vakarenko and inspector of the Dean's office T.L. Tretyak, were engaged in upbringing of future army medical officers under supervision of O.I. Scherbak.

Activities of the Dean's Office during that period resulted in implementation of the Concept of profile education at the Faculty for Training of Doctors for the Armed Forces of Ukraine. It allowed enhancing efficiency of pregraduation training of military and medical specialists for the Armed Forces of Ukraine and other military units of Ukraine.

Today the Faculty for Training of Doctors for the Armed Forces of Ukraine is led by Medical Corps lieutenant colonel, PhD (Medicine), associate professor O.M. Vlasenko. The Dean's deputies, assistant of Department hospital therapy № 2, PhD (Medicine) V.V. Moskalenko, associate professor of Human Anatomy Department, PhD (Medicine) M.A. Bezshtanko, time-table manager of the Dean's office Y.S. Vakarenko and inspector of the Dean's office, T.L. Nakonechna, are engaged in upbringing of future army medical officers under the Dean's supervision.

Selection of the candidates for education is performed on the competitive basis as envisaged by the Regulations on Admission to the Faculty for Training of Doctors for the Armed Forces of Ukraine of Bogomolets National Medical University.

Competition while entering the Faculty for Training of Doctors for the Armed Forces of Ukraine of Bogomolets National Medical University is from 1,3 to 2,5 among the male entrants and from 2,1 to 3,4 among the female entrants.

The Order regarding admission of the students, accepted for training and education with the purpose of future filling the positions of the doctors in the Armed Forces of Ukraine and other military units, formed in accordance with effective legislation of Ukraine, is signed by the Rector of Bogomolets National Medical University and the Head of the Military and Medical Academy of Ukraine.

Students of the Faculty can be expelled from the education institution in case of poor progress, indiscipline and unwillingness to study, low health level (substantiated with the opinion of the medical board) and impossibility to study because of the reasons beyond their control.

The persons, admitted to the Faculty, have the status of civilian students. They are provided with the text books and educational materials, accommodation and stipend during the entire period of studies as envisaged by the current legislation. The students are trained in accordance with the curriculum and programs, providing for specialized lecturing of the subjects at 2 – 6 year courses, which is possible due to extension of lecturing of the military and medical subjects and introduction of the special military elements in other subjects. It allows enhancing efficiency of pregraduation training of military and medical specialists.

Students of the Faculty are trained and educated in 80 Departments of the University. Training and education is performed by 63 members and corresponding members of the National Academy of Science of Ukraine, the Academy of Medical Science of Ukraine, the Academy of Pedagogical Science of Ukraine, 55 laureates of the National and other prizes, 37 Honorary Science and Technology Workers, 193 professors, 182 Doctors of Science (Medicine), 275 assistant professors, 632 PhD (Medicine).

In 2005/2006 academic year the first year students of the Faculty started their studies within the credit and module system in education process as required by the Bologna process.

297 students study at the Faculty, including 280 students being trained for speciality "General Medicine", 5 students – for speciality "Stomatology" and 12 students – for speciality "Pharmacy".

26 % of the Faculty's students are members of the Student's Scientific Society and take active part in the scientific work of the University's Departments. Best students of the Faculty are granted with the Scholarships for the outstanding achievements in their studies (Scholarships of the President of Ukraine, the Supreme Council of Ukraine, the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine, the University's Academic Senate).

The students actively participate in social and sport life of the Faculty and the University. 12,9% of the students joined the amateur talent groups and 22,6% of the students go in for sports and take part in social and public events. Participation of Abramenko Artem (6 year student), Krykun Yury (4 year student), Pchelintsev Makar (5 year student), Khomenko Tatiana (5 year student), Bakai Ivan (4 year student) in VII International Mediterranean Youth Festival ( Antalya) became an outcome of such activity of the Faculty. Member of the kettlebell lifting national team, Master of Sport, World Champion in weightlifting, five-year student Rai Olga is the pride and joy of the Faculty

Administration of the Faculty keeps involving its students in the events of the military and patriotic character, which are held by Bogomolets National Medical University with the purpose of military and patriotic upbringing, cultivation of national dignity. The students undergo all types of practical training in the medical and preventative care institutions of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine, the State Frontier Service of Ukraine, the Ministry of Interior of Ukraine and the Security Service of Ukraine to be aware of the conditions and the peculiarities of military and medical professional activity in the medical and preventative care institutions (2 nd year - patient care, 3 rd year – nursing care, 4 th and 5 th year – doctor's care – general medicine) and gain necessary skills of the future military doctors.

Students of other towns, being admitted for T&S at the Faculty for Training of Doctors for the Armed Forces of Ukraine, are accommodated in hostel № 3 of the University. There were 5 graduations throughout the history of the Faculty for Training of Doctors for the Armed Forces of Ukraine. The first graduation group consisted of 5 doctors – dentists and graduated in 2002. In year of 2003 88 students graduated from the Faculty, including 81 graduates, who obtained speciality "General Medicine", 3 graduates – "Preventative care", 3 graduates – "Stomatology". 87 students graduated from the Faculty in 2005, that graduation consisted of 78 graduates with speciality "General Medicine", 5 graduates – "Preventative care", 4 graduates – "Stomatology", 3 graduates – "Pharmacy".

Upon termination of the studies and getting a diploma the Faculty's graduates are guaranteed to be placed for job and employed within the system of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine.
